Structuring Safety Policy Decomposition

چکیده

Safety policy is a collection of rules that govern the behaviour of entities such that they do not cause accidents. It has been suggested that policies in general can be expressed at various levels of abstraction and organised as a hierarchy of goals. In developing policy, it is desirable to decompose from top-level objectives down to rules in a structured manner. The Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) allows us to model the policy decomposition in order to scrutinise and better understand the development process. In so doing, a number of issues arise concerning reusable patterns of decomposition and the assumed models of the system whose behaviour the policy is intended to govern. This paper discusses the need to structure a safety policy decomposition and howmodelling techniques and patterns can aid in this.

Defining and Decomposing Safety Policy for Systems of Systems

A ‘system of systems’ (SoS) comprises many other systems operating collectively with a shared purpose. Individual system autonomy can give rise to unpredictable, and potentially undesirable, emergent behaviour. A policy is a set of rules that bounds the behaviours of entities. Policy can be expressed at various levels of abstraction. By building on existing goal-based decomposition approaches t...

Planes, Trains and Automobiles — An Investigation into Safety Policy for Systems of Systems

Systems of systems comprise entities that are complex enough to be considered as systems in their own right. The interactions within a system of systems (SoS), unlike monolithic systems, are not constrained by physical design. The dynamic nature of SoS means that complex interactions are allowed to occur between the entities of a SoS. These interactions can lead to accidents. The road, rail and...

Morphological Structuring Elements

For image processing systems that have a limited size of region of support, say 3 x 3, direct implementation of morphological operations by a structuring element larger than the prefixed size is impossible. The decomposition of morphological operations by a large structuring element into a sequence of recursive operations, each using a smaller structuring element, enables the implementation of ...
